BALL CLAY HYMOD EXCELCIOR

Ref : IMOD

Ball Clay is a kaolinic clay that is generally composed of 20-80% kaolinite, 10-25% mica, 6-65% quartz, and organic matter.

Ball Clay is formed by weathering and water transport of source rocks.

The composition of veins within a deposit varies according to the amount of major and minor minerals.

Ball Clay is a fine-grained, highly plastic clay that is used primarily in the manufacture of white and sanitaryware ceramics, where it is valued for its plasticity, resistance to firing and light colour on firing.

Plastic Devon stoneware clay, known as Ball-Clay.

Characteristics :

    35% alumina
96% fine particles less than 5 microns

This results in an excellent plasticity which brings cohesion to the dry body in a composition, limiting the breakage of the pieces.
The % of Hymod is around 7%.

This Ball-Clay can also be used in an engobe or a glaze at around 2%. It serves as a plasticizer in the glaze slip and also as a suspensor.

The main point of Hymod Ecelsior is that it is a rare ball clay that can be used in a slip because it can be deflocculated. But beware, this clay is to be considered as a plasticity corrector, so the dosage is between 2 and 5%.

Classically, Hymod responds to soda ash and soda silicate for the slip. Refer to the data sheet, but first carry out tests to adjust the electrolyte dosages according to the hardness of the water (amount of limestone).
