Most powerful of the colouring pigments.
In lead and leadless glazes having a silica content produces strong deep blue whilst in alkaline glazes the colour is bright blue.
Glazes high in alumina develop a cool lighter blue.
Formula: Co3O4
High density black powder, insoluble in water and in most mineral acids and soluble in sulfuric acid.
It is an extremely powerful coloring oxide, obtaining with it a wide range of blues, from dark blue almost black when added to boracic or plumbic glazes, to bright blues with alkaline glazes.
In the presence of magnesium, purple tones (viola) can be obtained.
It is used to manufacture colorants, decals, etc....
