'A stoneware potter isolated in the earthenware and glazed earth region of Provence, René Ben-Lisa writes to break down the wall of his solitude. In 1971, he began a correspondence with Philippe Lambercy, another master of ceramics, whose calm and measured approach supported him in his “wanderings”. In 1987 he wrote back to Michel Le Gentil, a young potter with a literary background, trying to pass on to him the experience of an older ceramist. This exchange of letters did not end until his death in 1995.
[...] But his letters also reveal to us the deep reflections of his journey as an artist, with its uncertainties and despairs, in his desire to make ceramics out of time. In the course of his meditations, he questioned himself tirelessly about his art, seeking, with humility, the truth of the ceramic work and not its beauty.'
